Overview

Oyu Tolgoi and Rio Tinto organized a global employee townhall connecting employees and stakeholders across multiple countries and locations.

The broadcast originated from the Oyu Tolgoi mine site in Mongolia’s South Gobi region, creating a technically and operationally complex production environment.

Orgil Media was responsible for delivering the on-site multi-camera production and supporting the integration of speakers, presentations, audio, video content and the global broadcast platform.

The Challenge

Producing an international livestream from a remote operating mine requires considerably more planning than broadcasting from a conventional event venue.

The production needed to address:

  • restricted site access and operational procedures;
  • transportation of technical equipment and production personnel;
  • workplace health and safety requirements;
  • limited setup and rehearsal windows;
  • remote-site power and network conditions;
  • secure and reliable transmission;
  • global speakers and participants;
  • integration of presentations, videos and remote connections;
  • backup systems for critical technical functions;
  • coordination with international corporate and technical teams.

The event also required broadcast quality appropriate for a global corporate audience.

Our Role

Orgil Media’s responsibilities included:

Remote-Site Production Planning

The production model was developed around the operating conditions of the mine site.

Before the event, the team assessed:

  • available production space;
  • site-access procedures;
  • equipment-transport requirements;
  • power availability;
  • network access;
  • permitted technical connections;
  • camera and crew movement;
  • security and safety limitations.

The production setup was then designed to operate within these controls without interrupting mine-site activities.

Connectivity and Redundancy

Because the broadcast was intended for a global audience, connectivity was treated as a critical production system rather than a single internet connection.

The technical plan included testing and verification of:

  • primary network connectivity;
  • available backup connectivity;
  • upload stability;
  • streaming and encoding requirements;
  • remote-conferencing integration;
  • presentation feeds;
  • audio return paths;
  • local and remote recording.

Contingency procedures were prepared for possible signal, audio, presentation or connectivity failures.

Multi-Camera and Content Integration

The multi-camera setup was planned to provide a professional broadcast experience rather than a static recording of the room.

The production incorporated:

  • speaker close-ups;
  • wide venue coverage;
  • audience and interaction shots;
  • presentation content;
  • pre-produced videos;
  • on-screen speaker identification;
  • transitions between local and remote contributors.

Audio from speakers, presentations, videos and remote participants was integrated into one controlled broadcast mix.

Technical Rehearsals

The rehearsal process tested the entire production chain, including:

  • camera feeds;
  • microphones;
  • presentation switching;
  • video playback;
  • remote speakers;
  • platform connections;
  • graphics;
  • audio return;
  • backup procedures;
  • event timing and cue sequences.

This was essential because a successful remote-site broadcast depends on coordination between the program, technical systems and site operations.

International Broadcast Standards

The production was designed around the expectations of an international corporate audience.

Particular attention was given to:

  • consistent audio quality;
  • clear camera framing;
  • readable presentations;
  • professional transitions;
  • stable signal delivery;
  • accurate cueing;
  • controlled visual branding;
  • continuity between local and remote speakers.

Outcome

The townhall successfully connected thousands of employees and participants through a live broadcast originating from one of Mongolia’s most remote and operationally complex industrial locations.

The project demonstrated Orgil Media’s ability to combine on-site production, technical risk management and international broadcast coordination within a controlled mining environment.
